Intermediate Science Category Winner

Year 11 students Thaddeus Allison, Dylan O’Connor, Sam O’Connor, from Lewisham, were the winners of the intermediate science category of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition 2019, for their project Pee + Seeds = Food. The students’ project created a slow release fertiliser converted from urine and squash seeds. The creation can improve soil structure and provide magnesium, phosphate and nitrogen for plant growth. The product is easily produced with minimal equipment and could be adopted on a small scale in developing countries or on a larger scale in the UK. The team reached the UK finals of The Competition having won a place in the regional heats.

: Tell us about your experience at the finals

Thaddeus Allison, Dylan O’Connor, Sam O’Connor: The Big Bang Fair was an amazing experience. It felt incredible to go from experimenting in our kitchens to being called up onto the big stage. We can't wait to see how far we can take this project and we have learnt so much that will help us with our future plans.
